You asked how you can start playing videos _while_ they're downloading and I think it's called buffering. I could be wrong though.

But I use Linux and the program that I use to download videos and watch them in my browser is called 'MozPlugger', or sometimes called 'MPlayer Plugin' for Mozilla's Firefox. I don't know if it'd work for Mac, but you could probably just get the source code and recompile it on your cuntputer.

I use to just listen to the podcast, but just recently I watched all of the vlogs in succession. I love it. I realize it is quite a lot of work to do both, but I know that the time viewing them is well spent. I think that the two forms of media complement each other. I hope this was helpful. Also, I wanted to mention that I agree that other vloggers should converse through the medium. if you have the gear, why not use it?

and if it wasn't clear, i still listen to the podcast just as much and have recommended both sites to all of my friends and fellow students.

About recording the Vlog... did you try iveSeen for OSX ?? Maybe this is easy to get the Vlogs quick and dirty without too much hassle...
